Australia's new Minister for International Development Melissa Parke has refused to comment on how her appointment would be viewed in Indonesia.

Last year Ms Parke defied a request from then acting Foreign Minister Craig Emerson to boycott a meeting on the disputed provinces of Papua.
The former United Nations Human Rights Lawyer says her focus is on the aid program.

The Vanuatu Free West Papua Association is urging people to boycott of Indonesian products being sold in Vanuatu.

It follows the Melanesian Spearhead Group's decision to delay by six months any moves to allow the Free West Papua movement membership of the regional bloc.

New Australian minister distancing herself from West Papua support

Australia's new Minister for International Development Melissa Parke has tried to distance herself from her previous public support for the people of West Papua.

Last year Ms Parke defied a request from then acting Foreign Minister Craig Emerson to boycott a meeting on the Indonesian province. Now, with a portfolio in the new government of Kevin Rudd, the former United Nations Human Rights Lawyer is tyring to divert the focus on her and her previous actions, to what Australia is doing with its aid budget, and that includes defending the decision to divert a significant part of it to pay for the detention of asylumn seekers in Australia.
